On September 27, 2023, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas, in consultation with Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced Israel’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).
What is The Visa Waiver Program:
The Visa Waiver Program is meticulously designed to enhance security while promoting legitimate travel and commerce between the United States and its partner countries. It establishes comprehensive security partnerships, requiring strict adherence to counterterrorism measures, law enforcement cooperation, immigration enforcement, document security, and border management. To qualify, a country must issue secure travel documents, extend visa-free privileges to all U.S. citizens without discrimination, collaborate closely with U.S. law enforcement and counterterrorism authorities, and maintain a low rate of nonimmigrant visitor visa refusals.
Who Does This Impact?
The United States has designated Israel as the 41st member of the VWP.
Under the VWP, citizens and nationals of Israel will now enjoy the freedom to travel to the United States for tourism or business purposes, staying for up to 90 days without obtaining a U.S. visa. Likewise, U.S. citizens can reciprocally visit Israel for the same duration without a visa.
When will this change occur?
By November 30, 2023, Israel will officially join the VWP, enabling its citizens to travel to the United States for tourism or business purposes, visa-free, for up to 90 days. Similarly, U.S. citizens can explore Israel for the same duration without the hassle of obtaining a visa beginning November 30, 2023.
Accessing the Visa Waiver Program
Starting November 30, 2023, citizens and nationals of Israel can apply online for travel authorization to the United States through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). These authorizations are generally valid for two years, providing ease and convenience for travelers. For those holding valid B-1/B-2 visas, these visas can still be used for business and tourist travel to the United States.
