USCIS Update

June 12, 2023 – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has today announced a major expansion of premium processing for applicants seeking a change of status to F-1, F-2, M-1, M-2, J-1, or J-2 nonimmigrant status. This initiative comes as part of an ongoing effort to streamline services and reduce burdens on the overall immigration system.

The premium processing service, which provides expedited processing for certain immigration forms, will be expanded to include Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status. Applicants will also be able to file Form I-907, Request for Premium Processing Service, online.

This expansion of premium processing will be implemented in phases. The first phase begins on June 13, when USCIS will start accepting Form I-907 requests for applicants seeking a change of status to F, M, or J, who have a pending Form I-539. The second phase kicks off on June 26, when the USCIS will start accepting Form I-907 requests filed concurrently with Form I-539.

However, it’s important to note that premium processing is not available for individuals seeking an extension of stay in M-1 or M-2 status, and the premium processing requests will be rejected if received before the specified dates.

Another crucial aspect to remember is the requirement for biometrics submission. The premium processing timeframe does not begin until the applicant and all co-applicants included on the Form I-539 submit their biometrics.

To take advantage of online filing for Form I-907, applicants need to create a USCIS online account. This account allows applicants to submit forms, pay fees, and track the status of any pending USCIS immigration request throughout the adjudication process. It also provides a secure method to communicate with USCIS and respond to Requests for Evidence online.
