The path to U.S. citizenship has just become a bit smoother, thanks to a new update from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Starting April 1, applicants for naturalization can request a Social Security Number (SSN) or card update directly through the updated Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. This change simplifies one of the steps in the citizenship journey by integrating SSN applications with the naturalization process, eliminating the need for separate visits to the Social Security Administration (SSA) office.
What’s New with the updated N-400?
- Direct SSN Requests: Applicants can request an SSN or replacement card while filing the new edition of Form N-400, dated 04/01/24.
- No SSA Office Visits Required: This integration aims to streamline the process, removing the hassle of additional SSA office visits for new citizens.
- Online Filing and Benefits: The 04/01/24 edition of Form N-400 can be submitted online through a USCIS online account. This offers a secure method to submit forms, track status, and more without any setup cost.
Note for Applicants Using Older Forms: Applicants using the older 09/17/19 edition of Form N-400 won’t have this streamlined option, as it is only available with the new form edition.
This update is part of USCIS’s efforts to enhance the immigration and naturalization experience, reflecting its commitment to making the process more efficient and user-friendly. By integrating SSN applications into the naturalization process, USCIS is taking a significant step forward in simplifying bureaucratic procedures for applicants, marking a positive change in the journey to U.S. citizenship.
