1. What Is a Visa Interview Waiver?

A visa interview waiver allows certain applicants to renew or apply for a U.S. nonimmigrant visa without visiting a U.S. consulate or embassy for an in-person interview. Instead, eligible applicants may submit their documents through a drop-box service or mail.

2. What’s Changing on September 2, 2025?

Starting September 2, 2025, most nonimmigrant visa applicants, including children under 14 and adults over 79, will be required to attend an in-person interview with a consular officer.

This update replaces the previous policy issued on February 18, 2025.

3. Who Still Qualifies for an Interview Waiver?

The interview waiver is still available for a limited group of visa categories. You may qualify for a waiver if you are applying under one of the following:

  • A-1 or A-2 (Diplomats and government officials)
  • C-3 (except attendants, servants, or personal employees of accredited officials)
  • G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4 (International organization staff)
  • NATO-1 through NATO-6
  • TECRO E-1
  • Diplomatic or official-type visas

4. Rules for B-1/B-2 Visa Renewals & Mexican Border Cards

You may still be eligible for a visa interview waiver if you meet all the following conditions:

  • You are renewing a full-validity B-1, B-2, or B1/B2 visa, or a Border Crossing Card/Foil (for Mexican nationals)
  • You apply within 12 months of the expiration date of your previous visa
  • You were at least 18 years old when the prior visa was issued
  • You apply in your country of nationality or residence
  • You have never been refused a visa (unless the refusal was later overcome or waived)
  • You have no apparent or potential visa ineligibility

Please note: Consular officers may still request an in-person interview on a case-by-case basis for any reason.

5. What If I Don’t Qualify?

If you do not qualify for an interview waiver under the new rules, you will be required to schedule and attend an in-person interview at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Wait times and appointment availability may vary, so plan ahead and monitor updates on the official embassy website.

6. Tips Before You Apply

  • Review the website of your local U.S. embassy or consulate for application instructions and document checklists
  • Prepare your documents early, especially if you need an in-person appointment
  • Use the U.S. Department of State’s Visa Wizard to check your eligibility

7. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Will children under 14 need an interview now?

Yes. Most applicants under 14 will need to attend an interview under the new policy, unless they meet specific waiver qualifications.

Can I still qualify if my visa expired 13 months ago?

No. Interview waiver eligibility is only valid within 12 months of the prior visa’s expiration date.

What if I had a previous visa refusal?

You are not eligible for an interview waiver unless your refusal was overcome or waived by a consular officer.
