What is a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) and How Can It Help You Enter Canada?

A Temporary Resident Permit or TRP for short, is a document issued by the Canadian government that allows a person who is otherwise inadmissible, to enter and stay in Canada for a temporary period of time.

Eligibility

A TRP can only be issued if there are compelling reasons to allow the person to enter or stay in Canada, and if the benefit of their visit outweighs the potential risk to Canadian society.

Application

Applications can be made at any port of entry, such as an airport, land crossing, or sea entry point if the reason for entry is urgent and there was not enough time to apply at the Canadian consulate in your home country. If planned in advance, an application can be made at a consulate for advance permission to enter Canada.

Extensions

TRPs cannot be extended, but applicants can apply for a new or subsequent permit if they need to visit again or if they need to stay longer.

Conclusion

If you have been denied entry or are otherwise inadmissible to Canada because you have a criminal or DUI conviction, a TRP application can help you obtain the permission you need to go to Canada. You can apply for a TRP at any point in time after your conviction. When it is approved it will generally be valid for only one trip and it will be limited to the period of time you need to be in Canada. If you need to go to Canada multiple times, it can be issued for reentry but you would need to show that you have an ongoing need to travel to Canada.
