On January 30, 2023, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced new designs for both green card and employment authorization documents (EAD cards) to improve security. The current card design was introduced in May 2017, and USCIS plans to issue redesigned cards every three to five years as part of its fraud prevention program. Read the details of this announcement here.

When will production of the new green card and EAD cards begin?

The new redesigned cards will start being issued on Jan. 30, 2023. Some cards issued on or after Jan. 30, 2023, will have the current format until USCIS exhausts its current supply of cardstock. Once depleted all newly issued cards will contain the new design and security features.

What if I have an old green card or EAD card?

USCIS has indicated that the production of the new designs does not invalidate previously issued cards. Your current green card and EAD card will remain valid until their expiration date. There is no need to obtain a new card until your current card expires. Upon renewal, you will receive the newly designed card.
