Good news for certain visa applicants! The U.S. Department of State has updated the eligibility criteria for nonimmigrant visa interview waivers. Some applicants may no longer need to attend an in-person interview, making the visa process faster and more convenient.
Who Qualifies for an Interview Waiver?
Consular officers now have the authority to waive the interview for applicants in the following categories:
- Diplomatic and Official Visa Holders
- A-1, A-2, C-3 (excluding attendants, servants, or personal employees)
- G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4
- NATO-1 through NATO-6
- TECRO E-1 visas
- Diplomatic or official-type visa applicants
- Previous Visa Holders
- Applicants renewing a visa in the same category, as long as the previous visa expired less than 12 months ago.
Additional Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for an interview waiver, applicants must also:
✔ Apply in their country of nationality or residence
✔ Have never been refused a visa (unless the refusal was overcome or waived)
✔ Have no apparent or potential ineligibility
Important Notes
- Consular discretion: Even if you meet the criteria, consular officers can still require an in-person interview.
- Local conditions apply: Availability of waivers may vary by embassy or consulate.
- Check before applying: Visit the U.S. embassy or consulate website where you plan to apply for specific details.
This update replaces the previous interview waiver policy from December 21, 2023.
