For Fiscal Year 2026, the visa caps remain:
- 65,000 regular H-1B visas (regular cap)
- 20,000 additional visas for those with a U.S. master’s degree or higher (master’s cap)
Step by Step: How the 2026 H-1B Lottery Works
1. Electronic Registration Period (Expected March 2026)
USCIS opens a registration window, usually for about 2–3 weeks in March. Employers must:
- Create a myUSCIS online account
- Submit a registration for each worker they intend to sponsor
- Pay the new $215 fee per registration (effective as of March 2025)
This registration includes basic information about the employer and beneficiary, no supporting documents are required yet.
Only one registration per employer per employee is allowed. Duplicate entries will be denied.
2. Wage Based Lottery Selection
Once the registration window closes, USCIS selects registrations using a wage-weighted system instead of a purely random draw. Here’s how it works:
- USCIS conducts a selection for the 20,000 U.S. master’s cap spots

3. H-1B Petition Filing (April–June 2026)
If selected in the lottery, the employer has 90 days to submit a complete H-1B petition with supporting documents, including:
- Certified Labor Condition Application (LCA) from the Department of Labor
- Proof of specialty occupation
