Facial Biometrics Now in Use at Buffalo’s Peace Bridge Port of Entry
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has started a pilot program using facial biometric technology at select vehicle lanes of the Peace Bridge Port of Entry (POE) in Buffalo, NY. This new initiative, called Simplified Arrival-Vehicle Biometric, is designed to streamline the entry process while enhancing security measures for international travelers entering the U.S.
How It Works
- Biometric Lanes Marked Clearly: Inbound lanes 14, 15, and 16 are designated for biometric testing.
- Automatic Photo Matching: Cameras capture photos of vehicle occupants and compare them with existing government records, such as passport or visa data.
- Optional Participation: Travelers preferring standard manual document checks can use non-biometric lanes.
The process is passive, requiring no action from travelers in biometric lanes, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic flow.
Testing Timeline
The pilot program will run through March 2025, allowing CBP to assess the technology’s effectiveness in a challenging winter climate. Similar tests were successfully conducted at other border crossings, including Anzalduas, TX, and Nogales, AZ.
Privacy and Security
CBP ensures privacy protection for all travelers:
- U.S. Citizens: Photos are deleted within 12 hours.
- Foreign Nationals: Data is securely stored in DHS’s Automated Biometric Identification System (IDENT).
Why This Matters
This program aligns with CBP’s Congressional mandate to use biometrics for recording the entry and exit of foreign nationals. The advanced technology helps prevent document fraud and improves officer decision-making.
