Do I need a SSN to work on a TN Visa?

A social security number (SSN) is not required to start working in the United States on your TN visa. While you wait for your SSN to arrive, your employer can use the letter from the Social Security Administration (SSA) showing that you applied for a social security number, and your valid immigration documents to prove you have received legal authorization to work in the United States. You should wait at least 10 days after approval of your TN visa before applying for a SSN. After you have been approved for your TN visa and receiving your valid I-94, you are able to go to any Social Security Administration Office (SSA) to apply for your social security number (SSN).
