Understanding Pet Classification

Pets, as per regulatory definitions, include the following companion animals:

  1.  Dogs
  2.  Cats
  3. Rodents (excluding certain species)
  4.  Ferrets
  5.  Rabbits
  6.  Hedgehogs and Tenrecs
  7.  Reptiles
  8. Amphibians
  9. Birds (with varying APHIS regulations)

For animals not on this list, check USDA: Imports—Animal and Animal Products for specific restrictions based on health-related concerns.

Ensuring Your Pet’s Health on Arrival

Your pet’s health on arrival is paramount. Dogs and cats must be in good health, and if any signs of illness appear at the port of entry, a licensed veterinarian may conduct a further examination at the owner’s expense. Additionally, dogs from high-risk rabies countries require valid proof of rabies vaccination, as mandated by the CDC.

Temporary Suspension for Dogs from High-Risk Rabies Countries

As of July 14, 2021, there’s a temporary suspension for dogs imported from countries classified as “high risk” for dog rabies. Stay informed about this development by visiting the CDC website or emailing cdcanimalimports@cdc.gov.

Ensure your pet’s journey to the United States is seamless by understanding the regulations, health requirements, and any recent updates. For specific concerns or clarifications, it’s advisable to contact the anticipated port of arrival for expedited processing and minimal delays.
